[COE] Seminar: 2023/01/03 "Large-Numbers Microfluidic-Device Systems for Desktop Chemical Plants" - Prof. Chihchen CHEN, NEMS & PME/NTHU

11110E500100 College of Engineering Seminar

TOPIC
▸ Large-Numbers Microfluidic-Device Systems for Desktop Chemical Plants

Abstract
❝ Microfluidic technology offers the superior capability to manipulate fluids in time and space, thus enabling various applications mostly in biomedical and life science, but chemical synthesis is another target. We have already established collaboration projects with Daicel, The University of Tokyo, IMT Taiwan (IMTT), and Daicel-NTHU joint R&D center (JRDC) for developing large-scale multi-device microfluidic systems, which we term "Desktop Chemical Plants (DTPs)". A multi-device serial system is for complicated chemical synthesis processes, while a multi-device parallel system containing 100, 1,000, or even 10,000 microfluidic devices can be utilized for mass production. We have successfully built and sold a DTP that contains 120 microfluidic devices in May 2022. This DTP produces high-quality polymers with an annual production rate of 1.2 tons. This is the world's first technology. It is anticipated to contribute to next-generation high-performance chemicals for the semiconductor industry and biomedical industry, also, contributing to green chemistry and SDGs
